The trust is handing over the 3,500-acre tract to state forest managers to help protect Oahu's watershed and wildlife habitat.

The trust bought the land from the James Campbell Co.

The land covers a lowland forest on the eastern slope of the Waianae Mountain Range. It's home to 35 threatened and endangered species, including 16 found nowhere else in the world.

The land is also part of the watershed feeding the Pearl Harbor Aquifer, the largest drinking water resource on Oahu.

U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye and Senate President Colleen Hanabusa are joining Board of Land and Natural Resources Chairwoman Laura Thielen at today's dedication.

"New name for Arizona Memorial Museum Association announced

Advertiser Staff

The nonprofit organization that has long supported the USS Arizona Memorial has changed its name to reflect its broadening mission.

The Arizona Memorial Museum Association on Tuesday changed its name to Pacific Historic Parks.

The association was created in 1979 as a nonprofit cooperating association with the National Park Service to support and fund educational programs, museum displays and exhibits, and interpretive programs for the USS Arizona Memorial.

Many charter members of the association, originally from the Fleet Reserve Association, had been involved in the fundraising for the construction of the USS Arizona Memorial in 1961 and the original visitor center in 1980, officials said.

The Arizona Memorial visitor center now is part of the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument.

The Arizona Memorial Museum Association grew over the years to support interpretive and visitor activities at three additional national parks: American Memorial Park on Saipan; War in the Pacific National Historical Park on Guam; and Kalaupapa National Historical Park on Moloka'i.

"Our association's new name, Pacific Historic Parks, better reflects our expanded scope of support at historical sites throughout the Pacific," said chairman George Sullivan. "Lingle's executive order establishes two surfing reserves in Hawaii

Gov. Linda Lingle established surfing reserves by executive order today, resurrecting a measure killed by lawmakers in what could be a first.

The move was a symbolic gesture of support for retiring Republican state Sen. Fred Hemmings, whose bill establishing surfing reserves was "recommitted" in the last day of the legislative session in a move Republicans have taken offense to.

Political onlookers have said they couldn't recall a governor ever issuing an executive order to resurrect a bill killed by lawmakers.

The executive order sets up the reserves, which essentially highlight two surfing spots — in Waikiki and the North Shore — as important in the world of surfing.

The order doesn't have any appropriation, and doesn't change any enforcement or other rules.

"It's like declaring Diamond Head a national monument," said Hemmings, in a news conference today."

His courage and leadership earned him a legacy as the "Napoleon of the Pacific," and today his humanity is preserved in Ke Kanawai Mamalahoe, or "the Law of the Splintered Paddle." This law protects civilians in times of war and remains enshrined in Hawaii's constitution as "a unique and living symbol of the State's concern for public safety."

Note: This law was created during the Hawaiian Kingdom period, and the entity State of Hawaii, an illegal entity supported by the United States has criminally assumed our peaceful, neutral, non-violent nation claiming concern for public safety when they have played a part in terrorizing Hawaiian Kingdom subjects, their descendants over time.

On this bicentennial King Kamehameha Day, we celebrate the history and heritage of the Aloha State, which has immeasurably enriched our national life and culture. The Hawaiian narrative is one of both profound triumph and, sadly, deep injustice. It is the story of Native Hawaiians oppressed by crippling disease, aborted treaties, and the eventual conquest of their sovereign kingdom. These grim milestones remind us of an unjust time in our history, as well as the many pitfalls in our Nation's long and difficult journey to perfect itself. Yet, through the peaks and valleys of our American story, Hawaii's steadfast sense of community and mutual support shows the progress that results when we are united in a spirit of limitless possibility.

Note: the sale of Aloha by non kanaka maoli shows the reckless nature of a pirating nation, continuous rape mentality of an illegal U.S. President Obama who was born in the Hawaiian Islands, which is not part of the United States.

Obama recognizes the "deep injustice, discounts the thousands of deaths from introduced disease, breaches of treaties meant to be friendly, continuous and discounting treaties with other nations, and lies about an "eventual conquest of their sovereign kingdom" when the reality is that legally, lawfully, the U.S. premeditated the move against a friendly, neutral nation recognized in the Law of Nations as part of the Empire of the Pacific, a democratic group with Aetearoa (New Zealand), the Samoan Islands, and the Hawaiian Kingdom since the early 1800's while Kamehameha was still alive.

Obama further discounts the "unjust time in our history" when the reality is that we in the Hawaiian Islands are made up of a 3,000+ year old society versus a thieves, murderers, English castouts, made up of people opposing their religions and prompted to set up houses on already owned, occupied lands belonging to aboriginal Native Americans.

Along with homeless activities setting up to assume already owned lands, mercenaries/missionaries who began plantations in our Hawaiian Islands moved over to Mexican territory and obtained assistance from the U.S. calvary and assumed large tracts of non warring Mexicans and called the lands Texas.

The U.S. piracy(ies), racketeering ventures in our Hawaiian archipelago is recorded as evidence showing the pirating nature, the ruthless, criminal activities against a free, friendly, neutral nation which did no wrongs to a bankrupt nation now seeking to destroy, decimate our populations in our Hawaiian archipelago by using DU/ depleted uranium, GMO/genetic modified poisons, other toxic wastes in our environment by a claimed democratic nation moving to WAR with everything, everyone under the sun, muck up everyone's environment, in our nation/Hawaiian archipelago, and many other nations.

Ex-Bush speechwriter: I was to provide a justification for war

In late December 2001, chief presidential speechwriter Mike Gerson "was parcelling out the components of the forthcoming State of the Union speech. His request to me," recalls David Frum in his new book The White House in The Right Time: The Surprise Presidency of George W. Bush, "could not have been simpler: I was to provide a justification for a war."

And so was born the phrase "the axis of evil."

A year later, the impending all-out assault on Iraq is spinned as "a war of liberation." And there's a certain truth to the claim.

It will be a war that could liberate up to 500,000 Iraqis of their lives, according to the British healthcare group, Medact.

It will be a war that could liberate 200,000 Iraqis of their homes, and 10 million of their security against hunger and disease, according to a new UN report.

And, above all, it will be a war that will liberate Iraq of its oil wealth and put America more wholly in charge.

It will indeed be a war of liberation.

And one long in the making.

Key Bush cabinet members had been pushing for a take-over of Iraq and its oil fields for some time.

In September, 2000, Dick Cheney, now vice-president, along with his current chief of staff Lewis Libby, and Donald Rumsfeld, now Secretary of Defense, along with his deputy Paul Wolfowitz, laid out a plan to create a new American century, in which the United States would be supreme in the world, the first truly global empire.

The plan adumbrated regime change in Iraq, that is, the installation of a US puppet regime in Baghdad.

The events of 9/11 were pressed into service to provide the trigger.

Within hours of hijacked jets careening into the World Trade Centre and Pentagon, Rumsfeld was ordering his staff to find something that could be used to pin the blame on Iraq.

National Security advisor Condoleeza Rice ordered her staff to consider the opportunities 9/11 provided, as if the grim events of that day were a sliver lining that could justify the vigorous extension of US hegemony.

In his book, Frum recounts how he spent two days dreaming up a pretext for "going after Iraq," eventually hitting on the "axis of evil" idea, which he originally conceived of as the "axis of hatred" but which Gerson changed "to use the theological language that Bush" (mirroring Osama bin Laden) "had made his own since Sept. 11."

While Frum denies the decision to launch a ground invasion had been made when he was asked to "sum up in a sentence or two our best case for going after Iraq," the events leading up to Frum's inventing a pretext for the mass murder suggest the decision had been made long before that.

But more revealing is Frum's attack on the antiwar camp, for in dismissing its arguments, Frum lets slip the real reasons for the impending slaughter: American control of the Middle East.

"I knew that opponents of action against Iraq relied on two main points," Frum writes. "First, they say there was no direct, conclusive proof that Saddam Hussein aided the Sept. 11 terrorists."

This, Frum does not deny, but says Iraq, Iran, Hezbollah and al-Qaeda are linked in "resenting the power of the West," his rationale for drawing all four into an axis. (North Korea was added at the last minute, he explains, because "it needed to feel a stronger hand.")

"Saddam Hussein was certainly a very bad man, so was Stalin," Frum acknowledges. "We had relied on deterrence, not war, to contain him; why should we not do so with Saddam, who after all controlled a much weaker state than the old Soviet Union?"

Actually, it was less Stalin, and more Washington, with its insatiable appetite for meddling in Central and South America, in Africa, in Indochina, that needed to be contained, but lay that aside. In reply, Frum says this argument is nothing more that resentment of American power.

"An American-led overthrow of Saddam Hussein…and a replacement of the radical Baathist dictatorship with a new government more closely aligned with the United States–would put America more wholly in charge of the region than any power since the Ottomans. People who resent American power…very understandably dreaded such an outcome."

In Frum's view, there's a lot of resenting going on, all having to do with Washington's throwing its weight around to "more wholly take charge," and while it's no doubt true that Washington's jackbooting around the world occasions considerable resentment (as the Nazi's did), it's clear that Frum regards the resenting as somehow illegitimate.

Certainly, in the case of countries or organizations, resenting a US take-over is sufficient to earn your way onto Washington's hit-list; resentment is the tie that binds set upon countries into an axis.

Frum's views are entirely consistent with the tacit doctrine that holds sway among his journalistic colleagues in North America and the UK (Frum now writes for Canada's viciously right-wing, Washington-aligned The National Post) that the United States is now the legitimate world ruler, whose authority must be obeyed. Under this regime, ideas of national sovereignty are illegitimate, for all countries (at least the weakest ones, unable to fight back) are to consider themselves subordinate, and are to make way for Washington to manoeuvre itself into a position where it can be "more wholly in charge."

Emblematic of this thinking is the way North Korea is presented in the Anglo-American media: as defiant, for refusing to be bound by an international agreement Washington long ago abandoned, but has commanded Pyongyang to comply with. The very act of asserting one's national sovereignty or right of self-defense in the face of American edicts is considered a defiant act, as if Washington's power to compel compliance rests on legitimate authority and not simply the threat of force or economic warfare.

On the other hand, Washington can unilaterally rip up as many international agreements as it likes, undermine some (such as the International Criminal Court), refuse to be bound by others, and brazenly thumb its nose at international conventions (such as those established at Nuremberg,) and this veridical rogue behavior is regarded as perfectly legitimate, the actions of a sovereign.

Stripped of its verbiage, Frum's account reduces to this: "I was asked to provide a justification for a war that would put Washington more wholly in charge of the region that any power since the Ottomans."

For Frum, and the velociraptors plotting mass murder in the name of strengthening American primacy, there can be no cause higher than service to Washington's imperial ambitions. Inventing justifications for mass murder, are, therefore, wholly justifiable.

Pity those who resent it.

Frum's book is being excerpted in The National Post. His recounting of his inventing a pretext for going after Iraq appears in the January 8, 2003 edition.

Mahalo Amelia for responding so quickly in setting things right. It is also interesting to note that Kanawai Mamalahoe was not for protecting people in times of war. It was protection of all people from molestation, assaullt, or harrassment in public; who had a right to sleep or rest by the roadside or anywhere within the Kingdom.

The law of occupation is very explicit whereby the United States of America has continuously violates since 1893 where U.S. citizens are in violation of immigrating and residing within the occupied territory. They don’t lose their U.S. citizens whether or not they are born within the Kingdom of Hawai’i but are considered hostile occupiers/settlers. Their presence is in violation of the law of occupation.

During the unlawful invasion of the Kingdom of Hawai’i, the U.S. Minister Stevens under the approval of the Executive Branch of the U.S.A., protected and assisted in creating the Provisional government and gave the treasonous Committee of Safety assurance that they woud be protected by the U.S. military for their existence which emboldened them to make the proclamation establishing their Provisional Government. U.S. Minister Stevens immediately recognized the said Provisional Government before they had control of any government buildings, the police station, or the barracks of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

U.S. Minister Stevens informed the Queen if she resisted; it would be an act of war against the U.S.A. The said treasonous Provisional Government officials melted down silver dollars to create a tea set and presented it to U.S. Minister Stevens in gratitude for his participation and protection of establishing the Provisional Government for them.

To discredit the Blount report commissioned by U.S. President Cleveland, Senator Morgan who was the Grand Dragon of the racist Klu Klux Klan, exonerated all U.S. participants and placed the blame solely on Queen Liliuokalani. Consequently, the Turpie Resolution of 1894 was passed for non-interference of any U.S. officials or any other foreign government under threat of an act unfriendly towards the U.S.A. after the fact. President Cleveland insisted a more democratic form in the resolution and thus, the wording included, “Resolved, That of right-it-belongs wholly to the people of the Hawaiian Islands to establish and maintain their own form of government and domestic policy;…”

In response to this, the people’s plebiescite known as the Ku’e Petitions of 1897, overwhelmingly spoke for the people of Hawai’i. Partially because of this, the second submission of the treaty of annexation by the traitorous U.S. American puppet government now known as the republic of Hawai’i was again rejected for lack of 2/3rds majority vote as demanded by the U.S. Constitution.

To circumvent that outcome, Congress conducted a joint resolution called the Newlands Resolution which U.S. Rep. Ball pronounced as what couldn’t be done lawfully was done unlawfully. Many Congressmen agreed but were over-ridden by such a violation of domestic and international law. All U.S. domestic laws are null and void in Hawai’i; including annexation, statehood, and including the manifest destiny tool called the Akaka Bill to create a portion of the Hawaiian subjects/nationals as an indigenous American tribe.

This brings us to the conclusion that the Kingdom of Hawai’i still exists albeit under U.S. belligerent occupation with continuous violations of the law of occupation and the law of neutrality.

His courage and leadership earned him a legacy as the “Napoleon of the Pacific,” and today his humanity is preserved in Ke Kanawai Mamalahoe, or “the Law of the Splintered Paddle.” This law protects civilians in times of war and remains enshrined in Hawaii’s constitution as “a unique and living symbol of the State’s concern for public safety.”

On this bicentennial King Kamehameha Day, we celebrate the history and heritage of the Aloha State, which has immeasurably enriched our national life and culture. The Hawaiian narrative is one of both profound triumph and, sadly, deep injustice. It is the story of Native Hawaiians oppressed by crippling disease, aborted treaties, and the eventual conquest of their sovereign kingdom. These grim milestones remind us of an unjust time in our history, as well as the many pitfalls in our Nation’s long and difficult journey to perfect itself. Yet, through the peaks and valleys of our American story, Hawaii’s steadfast sense of community and mutual support shows the progress that results when we are united in a spirit of limitless possibility.

Obama recognizes the “deep injustice, discounts the thousands of deaths from introduced disease, breaches of treaties meant to be friendly, continuous and discounting treaties with other nations, and lies about an “eventual conquest of their sovereign kingdom” when the reality is that legally, lawfully, the U.S. premeditated the move against a friendly, neutral nation recognized in the Law of Nations as part of the Empire of the Pacific, a democratic group with Aetearoa (New Zealand), the Samoan Islands, and the Hawaiian Kingdom since the early 1800’s while Kamehameha was still alive.

Obama further discounts the “unjust time in our history” when the reality is that we in the Hawaiian Islands are made up of a 3,000+ year old society versus a thieves, murderers, English castouts, made up of people opposing their religions and prompted to set up houses on already owned, occupied lands belonging to aboriginal Native Americans.

“Hawaii’s steadfast sense of community and mutual support shows the progress that results when we are united in a spirit of limitless possibility.” In actuality, the lies built with the support of the U.S. military, government progressed towards the criminal, pirate thinking that criminals united can help to create goals of more raping, theft, criminal racketeering, which can extend beyond the Hawaiian Islands………..and all nations should be aware of this.

Note: “In the decades since their persecution, Native Hawaiians have remained resilient.” Obama addresses the non-bloods who have pirated the term Native Hawaiians as anyone born in the islands and have accommodated identity theft for the criminals supported by the U.S. government who has done criminal activities against our Queen Liliuokalani since 1893, her subjects (40,000 plus) versus the mere 3,000 Americans who were documented treasonous, conspirators against a neutral, non-violent nation and moved to War with the kanaka maoli land owners, resource owners, water rights, archipelago owners thru the pirating activities of bankrupt U.S., England and the Morgan bankers who were the investors for slave supporting nations.

In 1852, our Hawaiian Kingdom passed the anti-slavery laws, while the U.S. passed theirs more than 13 years or in 1865 after their President Lincoln was assassinated.

“..the Aloha Spirit of Hawaii echoes the American Spirit, representing the opportunities we all have to grow and learn from one another as we carry our Nation toward a brighter day.” The criminal use of good words “Aloha Spirit” is merely another form of piracy used to assume all that belongs to our Hawaiian, kanaka maoli, good people which is in no way connected to the “American Spirit” which was created by a 200+ year old nation with a criminal, thieves, murderers, prisoners background, the throwaways/castouts of the English Society, the scum and scoundrels who have always wanted what others have.

The U.S. piracy(ies), racketeering ventures in our Hawaiian archipelago is recorded as evidence showing the pirating nature, the ruthless, criminal activities against a free, friendly, neutral nation which did no wrongs to a bankrupt nation now seeking to destroy, decimate our populations in our Hawaiian archipelago by using DU/ depleted uranium, GMO/genetic modified poisons, other toxic wastes in our environment by a claimed democratic nation moving to WAR with everything, everyone under the sun, muck up everyone’s environment, in our nation/Hawaiian archipelago, and many other nations.

Note: Kamehameha Day has been a recognized day of our kanaka maoli and recognized in the Hawaiian Kingdom for more than 150 years.

Ex-Bush speechwriter: I was to provide a justification for war

In late December 2001, chief presidential speechwriter Mike Gerson “was parcelling out the components of the forthcoming State of the Union speech. His request to me,” recalls David Frum in his new book The White House in The Right Time: The Surprise Presidency of George W. Bush, “could not have been simpler: I was to provide a justification for a war.”

And so was born the phrase “the axis of evil.”

A year later, the impending all-out assault on Iraq is spinned as “a war of liberation.” And there’s a certain truth to the claim.

It will be a war that could liberate up to 500,000 Iraqis of their lives, according to the British healthcare group, Medact.

It will be a war that could liberate 200,000 Iraqis of their homes, and 10 million of their security against hunger and disease, according to a new UN report.

And, above all, it will be a war that will liberate Iraq of its oil wealth and put America more wholly in charge.

It will indeed be a war of liberation.

And one long in the making.

Key Bush cabinet members had been pushing for a take-over of Iraq and its oil fields for some time.

The plan adumbrated regime change in Iraq, that is, the installation of a US puppet regime in Baghdad.

The events of 9/11 were pressed into service to provide the trigger.

Within hours of hijacked jets careening into the World Trade Centre and Pentagon, Rumsfeld was ordering his staff to find something that could be used to pin the blame on Iraq.

In his book, Frum recounts how he spent two days dreaming up a pretext for “going after Iraq,” eventually hitting on the “axis of evil” idea, which he originally conceived of as the “axis of hatred” but which Gerson changed “to use the theological language that Bush” (mirroring Osama bin Laden) “had made his own since Sept. 11.”

While Frum denies the decision to launch a ground invasion had been made when he was asked to “sum up in a sentence or two our best case for going after Iraq,” the events leading up to Frum’s inventing a pretext for the mass murder suggest the decision had been made long before that.

But more revealing is Frum’s attack on the antiwar camp, for in dismissing its arguments, Frum lets slip the real reasons for the impending slaughter: American control of the Middle East.

“I knew that opponents of action against Iraq relied on two main points,” Frum writes. “First, they say there was no direct, conclusive proof that Saddam Hussein aided the Sept. 11 terrorists.”

This, Frum does not deny, but says Iraq, Iran, Hezbollah and al-Qaeda are linked in “resenting the power of the West,” his rationale for drawing all four into an axis. (North Korea was added at the last minute, he explains, because “it needed to feel a stronger hand.”)

“Saddam Hussein was certainly a very bad man, so was Stalin,” Frum acknowledges. “We had relied on deterrence, not war, to contain him; why should we not do so with Saddam, who after all controlled a much weaker state than the old Soviet Union?”

“An American-led overthrow of Saddam Hussein…and a replacement of the radical Baathist dictatorship with a new government more closely aligned with the United States–would put America more wholly in charge of the region than any power since the Ottomans. People who resent American power…very understandably dreaded such an outcome.”

In Frum’s view, there’s a lot of resenting going on, all having to do with Washington’s throwing its weight around to “more wholly take charge,” and while it’s no doubt true that Washington’s jackbooting around the world occasions considerable resentment (as the Nazi’s did), it’s clear that Frum regards the resenting as somehow illegitimate.

Certainly, in the case of countries or organizations, resenting a US take-over is sufficient to earn your way onto Washington’s hit-list; resentment is the tie that binds set upon countries into an axis.

Frum’s views are entirely consistent with the tacit doctrine that holds sway among his journalistic colleagues in North America and the UK (Frum now writes for Canada’s viciously right-wing, Washington-aligned The National Post) that the United States is now the legitimate world ruler, whose authority must be obeyed. Under this regime, ideas of national sovereignty are illegitimate, for all countries (at least the weakest ones, unable to fight back) are to consider themselves subordinate, and are to make way for Washington to manoeuvre itself into a position where it can be “more wholly in charge.”

Emblematic of this thinking is the way North Korea is presented in the Anglo-American media: as defiant, for refusing to be bound by an international agreement Washington long ago abandoned, but has commanded Pyongyang to comply with. The very act of asserting one’s national sovereignty or right of self-defense in the face of American edicts is considered a defiant act, as if Washington’s power to compel compliance rests on legitimate authority and not simply the threat of force or economic warfare.

Stripped of its verbiage, Frum’s account reduces to this: “I was asked to provide a justification for a war that would put Washington more wholly in charge of the region that any power since the Ottomans.”

For Frum, and the velociraptors plotting mass murder in the name of strengthening American primacy, there can be no cause higher than service to Washington’s imperial ambitions. Inventing justifications for mass murder, are, therefore, wholly justifiable.

Pity those who resent it.

Frum’s book is being excerpted in The National Post. His recounting of his inventing a pretext for going after Iraq appears in the January 8, 2003 edition.

We joined the Kamehameha Day Celebration Commission’s event at Iolani
Palace today and displayed names of the kupuna who signed the ku`e
petitions in 1897, ending up with about 1100 signs at the end of the
afternoon. Mahalo to those who came out to kokua (and there were
many!) and to the kupuna who took a stand in 1897 against the
annexation of Hawaii to the U.S. Ours was a celebration of the
Hawaiian Kingdom, from Kamehameha I until the illegal overthrow in
1893, recognizing our kupunas’ loyalty to Queen Liliuokalani and
country, and the Queen’s legacy of resistance to American imperialism
in the Pacific.

News flash. The United States engages in secret war.

To millions of Americans, and hundreds of millions around the world, this is not news. It’s part of an ongoing part of U.S. foreign policy.

Last century is littered with examples. Chile, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Korea, Congo, Somalia, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Cuba, Panama, Grenada, Haiti, Colombia, Poland, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Soviet Union … shall I go on?

All these countries — and more — have had U.S. special forces deployed in them. Many of them under the auspices of the CIA or the Pentagon or some other U.S. military/intelligence group, including private corporations.

Some of these operations have been run out of the basement of the White House. (Last century’s Reagan and Iran-gate) Some have been run out of the vice president and president’s offices. (This century’s Bush/Cheney and Iraq, Afghanistan … )

All of these operations have had the goal of crushing democracy and any budding socialist-oriented or worker-friendly movements or nations, controlling resources, including labor, for U.S. corporations, and, especially during the Cold War, blunting the Soviet Union. Some of these operations have assassinated people, including elected leaders.

(It’s also important to point out these “special ops” also happen on U.S. soil: re: COINTELPRO ,etc. That is one reason in the1970s Sen. Frank Church and a Senate committee investigated the CIA and FBI and found the CIA conducts “covert media operations” in the U.S. to “manipulate” public opinion. Hmmm. Sounds eerily familiar to 2002-2003 Iraq war build up.)

But recently, The Washington Post reports President Obama has “significantly expanded a largely secret U.S. war against al-Qaeda and other radical groups.” A reality, they say, in a post-Sept. 11 world.
The article continues, “Special Operations forces have grown both in number and budget, and are deployed in 75 countries, compared with about 60 at the beginning of last year. In addition to units that have spent years in the Philippines and Colombia, teams are operating in Yemen and elsewhere in the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia.”

There are 13,000 such special operatives, according to the report, with 9,000 of them mainly in Iraq and Afghanistan. Eighty percent of them, one official said, are to resolve “current conflicts.”

Assassinations and drone attacks are part of the operations, yet, WaPo reports, they “go beyond unilateral strikes and include the training of local counter-terrorism forces and joint operations with them.”

The Atlantic Monthly, in a recent blog post called “The end of Dick Cheney’s kill squads,” says there is considerable difference in Obama secret warfare policy and the Bush/Cheney years.

Comparing it to Seymour Hersh’s expose of the Bush/Cheney “executive assassination ring” AM says, “While reports for some time have indicated that the Obama administration has continued and even expanded military special operations throughout the world, it is now clear that he has increased oversight and ended the Bush-era practice running secret military operations directly from the presidential and vice president offices.”

AM calls it “an important change to the Bush-era use of military special operations,” which now is overseen by “regional military commanders as well as the State Department.”

But, AM, questions, like many, the expansion of secret warfare, without any judicial oversight, legal (or moral) authority, including assassination orders, which only continues the “judge, jury and executioner”-type of foreign policy of old.

The secret war report somewhat eclipsed the release of the Obama administration’s new National Security Strategy, which, by all reports, looks “beyond” military might to “maintain” U.S. influence and interests around the world; emphasizes diplomacy and development; does away with unilateralism of the Bush/Cheney era and emphasizes building “global institutions,” expanding partnerships and multilateralism beyond “traditional allies.”

Many have said it’s a departure from the saber-rattling of the Bush administration, but does not go far enough in a break with past, destructive foreign policies, and is a long way from a more “good neighbor”-type of policy.

At a recent progressive conference, America’s Future NOW!, speakers on foreign policy emphasized the shift , but also said there has to be a larger and more influential movement on the ground to win a significant change in U.S. foreign policy.

Mark it on your calendar. It seems we’ve finally entered the Soviet era in America.

You remember the Soviet Union, now almost 20 years in its grave. But who gives it a second thought today? Even in its glory years that “evil empire” was sometimes referred to as “the second superpower.” In 1991, after seven decades, it suddenly disintegrated and disappeared, leaving the United States — the “sole superpower,” even the “hyperpower,” on planet Earth — surprised but triumphant.

The USSR had been heading for the exits for quite a while, not that official Washington had a clue. At the moment it happened, Soviet “experts” like Secretary of Defense Robert Gates

(then director of the CIA) still expected the Cold War to go on and on

. In Washington, eyes were trained on the might of the Soviet military, which the Soviet leadership had never stopped feeding, even as its sclerotic bureaucracy was rotting, its economy (which had ceased to grow in the late 1970s) was tanking, budget deficits were soaring, indebtedness to other countries was growing, and social welfare payments were eating into what funds remained. Not even a vigorous, reformist leader like Mikhail Gorbachev could staunch the rot, especially when, in the late 1980s, the price of Russian oil fell drastically.

Looking back, the most distinctive feature of the last years of the Soviet Union may have been the way it continued to pour money into its military — and its military adventure in Afghanistan — when it was already going bankrupt and the society it had built was beginning to collapse around it. In the end, its aging leaders made a devastating miscalculation. They mistook military power for power on this planet. Armed to the teeth and possessing a nuclear force capable of destroying the Earth many times over, the Soviets nonetheless remained the vastly poorer, weaker, and (except when it came to the arms race) far less technologically innovative of the two superpowers.

In December 1979, perhaps taking the bait of the Carter administration

whose national security advisor was eager to see the Soviets bloodied by a “Vietnam” of their own, the Red Army invaded Afghanistan to support a weak communist government in Kabul. When resistance in the countryside, led by Islamic fundamentalist guerrillas and backed by the other superpower, only grew, the Soviets sent in more troops, launched major offensives, called in air power, and fought on brutally and futilely for a decade until, in 1989, long after they had been whipped, they withdrew in defeat.

Gorbachev had dubbed Afghanistan “the bleeding wound,”

and when the wounded Red Army finally limped home, it was to a country that would soon cease to exist. For the Soviet Union, Afghanistan had literally proven “the graveyard of empires.” If, at the end, its military remained standing, the empire didn’t. (And if you don’t already find this description just a tad eerie, given the present moment in the U.S., you should.)

Value of Afghanistans mineral discovery needs to be dealt with cautiously

The good news from the men at the Pentagon is that beneath the landmines Afghanistan is sitting on a goldmine.

Exactly when they took their degrees in geology is unclear but officials have estimated that Afghanistans mineral resources could be worth $1 trillion.

This suspiciously round number appears to be based on geological surveys made decades ago as well as recent on-the-ground research.

How thorough that could have been is open to debate, given that it takes the worlds best miners about a decade to explore a new area.

Factor in Afghanistans size, and the Pentagon must have had an army of geologists working in the country since immediately after 9/11 to have accurately studied its terrain.

The $1 trillion figure is, therefore, highly misleading. It is a theoretical number and may have little relation to the value of resources that could actually be exploited.

After all, you can dig up any garden in the UK and find copper, iron and all manner of other metals and minerals. The North Sea alone contains an estimated $207 billion of gold.

The difference between a British garden and the vast mines of Australia and South Africa is that minerals and metals are found there in quantities and concentrations that make it economical to extract.

It will be of little benefit to Afghanistan if its $1 trillion of mineral resources would cost $2 trillion to dig up.

The Americans have also made an error in publicising this guesstimate of Afghanistans mineral wealth because it will raise expectations and thereby inflate future facilitation payments.

It is an unwritten rule among mining companies that you never get too specific about the potential value of deposits in developing countries as it only serves to inflate the bribes that are requested.

Afghanistans former Minister of Mines has already been accused by the Americans of receiving a $30 million bribe to allocate mining licences.

Even if there were $1 trillion of mineral resources in Afghanistan, and even if those resources were economically viable, it would be years before a large Western miner considered going anywhere near the country.

BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Xstrata and Anglo American the worlds largest miners have no intention of moving into Afghanistan because the risk is far greater than the reward.

It would cost $5 billion or more to develop a large copper, iron ore or gold mine in Afghanistan and potentially a further $5 billion to build the necessary infrastructure (roads, railways, etc).

No company will risk that sort of money in a country where the Government does not control all the territory and contract law is far from solid.

The only people to have shown an interest in Afghanistans mines so far are the Chinese because, unlike a private company, they can tie agreements to foreign aid, loans and arms deals things that Kabul will not want to renege on.

It is possible that Chinas grab for Afghan resources has prompted the Pentagons attempt to generate some interest from the rest of the world in the countrys resources.

The Americans might not like the idea of someone else benefiting from its military commitment to Afghanistan but Chinese mines might still be preferable to poppy fields.

What does the BP “escrow”
deal really mean?

People all around the country have put so much pressure on the Obama administration that it had to “do something” to look like it was standing up to BP. The announcement today of a so-called $20 billion escrow fund from BP would never have happened without mass pressure. But does this fund truly respond to the needs of the people in the Gulf Coast states?

Too much is at stake for people to let down their guard and accept the “feel good” sound-bite version of what took place today in the meeting between President Obama and BP’s executives.

The White House and BP are creating a mythology, or “spin,” on what the tentative agreement signifies.

It is noteworthy that BP’s executives are very happy with the new agreement. Their necessary goal as a corporation is to maximize profits, and not to pay damages to all of those who have been harmed. As the Washington Post reported after the meetings, “Behind the scenes, the company had signaled what it expected from Wednesday’s meeting—and the company appears to have gotten exactly what it wanted.”

It is quite clear to us, even though much more will be revealed in the coming days and weeks, that we have to accelerate the movement for justice. This agreement is not only inadequate but attempts to shield BP from paying all the damages and compensation for lost work, ruined small businesses, and a devastated ecosystem.

At first glance, one would believe, based on the headlines that the Obama Administration compelled BP to set aside $20 billion dollars in an escrow account to meet the needs of people and communities harmed by BP’s criminal negligence.

But this is actually a great deal for BP.

The facts on the “escrow” account

The “escrow account” in 2010 is not $20 billion dollars. BP will put in $3 billion dollars in the third quarter of 2010 (ending September 30) and another $2 billion in the fourth quarter (ending December 31). Thereafter, it will have to make installments of $1.25 billion each quarter for the next three years.

This means that the necessary money will not be available to pay the tens of billions in losses that are real and immediate. It also means that people and businesses will have to get in line.

The real number for the escrow account in 2010 is $5 billion—six months from now at the earliest. To put this in perspective, BP has been bringing in between $26 billion and $36 billion annually in profits on revenue of $250 billion, and pays out more than $10 billion in dividends yearly.

According to a report in Forbes, BP could absorb $35 billion in spill costs before it would have a “material impact” on its operations. But instead, it will be allowed a paltry $5 billion a year, in an installment plan over four years.

Another measure of perspective can be had by comparison of this $5 billion per year voluntary set-aside to the accumulated potential fines and penalties under the Clean Water Act. BP can be fined $4,300 per barrel of oil spilled as a consequence of gross negligence. With the recent acknowledgment that the spill volume is 60,000 barrels per day, that is a potential penalty of over $250 million per day. Put another way, every 60 days accumulates a potential $15 billion fine under the Act. The voluntary arrangement to set aside $5 billion per year is meager in comparison.

This, of course, reflects Obama’s unwillingness to exercise legal authority against BP. Department of Justice lawyers could be initiating prosecutions for the accumulated fines, but aside from the announcement of potential investigations, this has not occurred.

Obama denies that his deal with BP will function as a cap on its liability, but this remains to be determined. The deal appears to functionally provide a shield for BP. As one investment advisor told the Wall Street Journal, the agreement puts “an end to the financial bleeding,” and allows investors to assess what BP’s total liabilities might be. So while President Obama stresses that the plan is not a cap on liability, it certainly appears as one. The installment terms of the payments themselves limit the amounts that will be made available while people are seeking claims.

Mr. Feinberg to the rescue—again

President Obama announced that the fund will be administered by Kenneth Feinberg, a Washington lawyer who made $5.7 million in his law practice in 2008. Mr. Feinberg has played a particular role in Washington at the time of virtual uprising against the banks and bankers’ bonuses. He was appointed to be the “pay czar” by Obama reviewing and approving many of the obscene bonuses doled out to AIG and other executives after they were bailed out with hundreds of billions of dollars of taxpayers’ money. As Reuters wrote today, “He has been hailed for soothing the egos of Wall Street executives clutching on to big paychecks, while still looking tough to a general public shocked by massive payouts to firms on a government lifeline.”

There is very little other information about how claims will be processed. There will have to be determinations made as to what, in the parlance of both BP and President Obama, is a “legitimate” claim. While Obama stated that anyone can file a claim, that doesn’t mean that the claim will be accepted or paid. Nor does it appear that the decision-making process will include any of the affected Gulf coast residents or their representatives from the fishers, shrimpers, crabbers, unions, small business people and workers in the tourism and recreation industry, local elected officials, clergy, and independent scientists and environmentalists.

Details must be forthcoming about claims payments and standards. Can we expect tens of thousands of people to receive checks by the end of the month? One thing is clear: The limited level of the fund necessarily means that claims cannot be paid equivalent to the damages incurred right now.

The creation of the so-called escrow fund was the result of a nationwide mass movement. Now is the time to step up our organizing to make sure that we have the kind of escrow fund that can really meet the needs of the people and repair the vast environmental damage caused by BP.

And yesterday Obama finally did what I called for almost six weeks ago– he’s bringing 17,000 National guard troops to the states afflicted by the gulf spill. How much longer before he fires Ken Salazar and those worthless advisors of his— Emanuel, Geithner, Summers, Orszag and Axelrod.

I don’t like bashing Obama.There is still a barely lit ember of hope in my heart that Obama will find his better self and do the right thing and become a strong leader. But first he has to climb out of the latrine he’s created with the advisors he currently has.

It’s easy to get discouraged by the news. A seemingly endless oil spill. Seemingly endless wars. But there is reason to hope–even reason to celebrate–the power of grassroots organizing. This month has been chock full of victories for those who hunger for (and work for) peace. Read about the successes below and then move that energy into taking action, telling Sen. Reid and Speaker Pelosi to step up

and lift the liability cap for BP and other oil companies, put an end to offshore drilling and pass a clean energy bill!

The Gaza Freedom Flotilla was a breath-taking global effort, with over 700 people from 42 countries putting themselves at risk to lift the inhumane siege on Gaza. It is tragic that 9 people lost their lives in this effort, but thanks to the flotilla, world attention is focused on Gaza. Even the U.S. policy has been affected, with President Obama now calling the Gaza closure “unsustainable.” Col. Ann Wright, a flotilla passenger and world renowned peace activist, is touring internationally to talk about her experience–bring Ann to your town or donate

to help her spread the truth about the flotilla massacre.

On the domestic front, we have also seen the power of grassroots activism. After an 18-month protest by CODEPINK and other peace activists, the U.S. military decided to shut down its Army Experience Center

at the Franklin Mills Mall in Northern PA! This glorification of violence was a prototype designed to be rolled out to malls across the country. Great work, CODEPINK PA, Coalition for Peace Action, and allies, for shielding our children from one more shameful attempt to lure them into war.

We also want to applaud the parents, students and peace activists in Maryland who pushed for–and won–a statewide law that stops the information about high school students from being automatically sent to military recruiters.Maryland is the first state to pass such a law

, and their victory is inspiring activists around the country.

In the midst of the Gulf oil disaster, we can celebrate one victory for the environment. Thanks to the thousands of you who called and emailed, the U.S. Senate voted down a measure from Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) to gut the Clean Air Act by weakening regulations that keep harmful pollution out of the air we all breathe.

Let’s keep the victories coming!

Tension builds once again as Myanmar prepares for its elections. Many fear that widespread arrests and detainment will result from election-related crackdowns.

Moreover, contributing to the anxiety is the anticipated release of democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been held under house arrest for nearly 15 years.

But Suu Kyi has been close to completing her sentence before. Just last year, as she neared her release date, she was found guilty of allowing an uninvited American man to stay at her home after he strapped homemade flippers to his feet and swam across a lake bordering her house. Authorities sentenced her to 18 more months of detention – meaning that she would not be released until after Myanmar’s elections were completed.

These arbitrary sentences just won’t do. Demand that Aung San Suu Kyi be released immediately and unconditionally.

Free Aung San Suu Kyi!

Earlier this year, Suu Kyi’s party, National League for Democracy (NLD), was dissolved for refusing to re-register as a political party, a move that would have forced it to expel its own leader because she is serving a prison term1.

It is painfully obvious that Myanmar’s government is doing all it can to box Suu Kyi and her supporters into a corner. Her very existence challenges the military’s authority because she inspires the people of Myanmar to believe.

More than ever, it’s up to us to stand united.

When news about one of the most iconic and revered leaders of our time breaks, whatever the outcome, we need to be able to call on you to stand with Aung San Suu Kyi and stand up for human rights.

Dave History

Two years ago this week, the LATE SHOW debuted the CBS Orchestra’s own music video, which can be found online and frequently airs on the show when there are long closing credits. It’s the band’s third video created during their long association with Dave’s late night shows. Their first, “Dress Cool,” aired on LATE NIGHT’s first Holiday Film Festival in 1985, and the second, “You Kill Me,” aired on LN’s second HFF the following year. The band has released two CDs, Paul Shaffer’s “Coast to Coast” (1988) and “The World’s Most Dangerous Party” (1993).

Paul’s association with his fellow band members goes back 34 years. He and bassist Will Lee first met at a recording session for Paul Jabara in 1976 (the two Pauls later co-wrote the disco hit “It’s Raining Men” in the early ’80s). Will later became a founding member of LN’s World’s Most Dangerous Band in 1982.

Paul and guitarist Sid McGinnis may have first met at either a John Mayall (“Bottom Line”) or Phyllis Hyman (“Somewhere in My Lifetime”) recording session, both in 1978. Sid became the WMDB’s permanent guitarist in 1984.

Paul and drummer Anton Fig first played together at a Joan Armatrading recording session (“Me Myself I”) in March, 1980. Anton joined the WMDB in 1986.

Paul and trombonist Tom Malone first worked together in the original Saturday Night Live band in 1975. The two of them helped put together the original Blues Brothers in 1978.

Paul first heard saxophonist Bruce Kapler and trumpeter Alan Chesnovitz in a band called Benny Harrison & the Spyders at the China Club in NYC in 1986. The two began to sit in with the WMDB in 1988. Tom and Bruce joined the CBS Orchestra in November 1993, and Alan followed in February 1997.

Guitarist Felicia Collins first fell into the band’s orbit in 1985, when she performed with Will Lee, both backing up the Thompson Twins, at Live Aid in Philadelphia. She and Paul first shared the stage two years later in Madison Square Garden at a medical benefit concert for homeless children, hosted by Paul Simon.

a. RP/Royal Patent LCA/Land Commission Award brief history (shows names of deceased owners and successors)
b. Survey Notes (obtain from the Archives, Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii) which shows the map, dimensions of the land(s). (ask the Archivist how to obtain your survey notes….. also ask how to look at the books available documenting awards from the Great Mahele/ Kamehameha III period, an extra step to take is to find out the testimonies in regards to the parcel(s)/lands belonging to your families.

5) JURAT, NOTARY page

6) Xerox two (2) or more sets. The notary usually wants to do only two (2) for a set. If more copies are needed for family members, you could make copies after the notary signs the documents, and even after the filing is completed.

7) obtain a notary signature from your Credit Union, bank — First Hawaiian Bank has a preferred customer account that you may be able to qualify for……worth it because the cost of a Notary will be nothing/free……….at the Credit Unions and some banks also give free notary signature……cousin paid about $50 a couple of weeks ago —$5 per notary signature.

8) take the two (2) sets of documents to the Bureau of Conveyances, Regular System section and pay $25 for a set which covers up to 20 pages. Any amount of pages over 20 will cost $1 per page.

9) The Bureau of Conveyances located on Punchbowl Street is open in the mornings till 3:30 p.m. They do not accept documents later than that time. (Mondays-Fridays (Holidays closed)).
